Universal left wanting

Has Jolie pulled trigger on sequel?

Universal's desired sequel to Timur Bekmambetov's 2008's Wanted has been shut down after the actress turned attention to an alternative project.

According to the Vulture blog, Jolie is intent on starring in Gravity, a space thriller that is co written by Alfonso Cuarón [see Children of Men] and his son Jonas. The role will see Jolie alone on-screen for much of the movie, playing the sole surviving human member of a space mission, trying to return home to Earth and her daughter.

Consequently, rather than rewrite or recast the sequel Universal have decided to halt all development after losing their star.

Ironically, Gravity had originally been in the hands of Universal, with Jolie set to star. However, the decision was made to put the project in turnaround and was snapped up by Warners, with Jolie following. Universal could well be counting the cost of this decision as any vision of a Wanted franchise is left in serious doubt.
